add the ability to load other maps, raster, whatever format, there are plenty of Gis programs to build your own raster maps for almost any part of the globe. add contour lines to the exisiting vector map once parameters were accepted, processing took approximately 40 s per one map sheet (three-layered raster image with 9600 rows and 14000 columns. The topoDistance package contains a raster dataset that includes a DEM for part of Yosemite National Park. All that is required is an elevation raster (DEM) and a set of geographic points. I know we're limited in storage but you can always load a small area where you're gonna ride and replace maps at home if you're planning a route far from your everyday area. The Polish topographical map published in the 1930s showed low accuracy which could be attributed to methods of cartographic presentation used and degradation of original colour prints. Identifying shortest topographic paths and calculating topographic distances is straightforward with the topoDist() function. From a visual point of view classic topo maps (an example for Spain is products, mtn25) are the easiest to understand and to know what you have around, a flat valley going down all the way to home or a steep cliff that you won't do by bycicle unless you're a pro. A raster map consists of a matrix of pixels organized into a grid, where each pixel contains a value representing spatial information. Scanned (digital) topographic maps are called Digital Raster. This layer is a georeferenced raster image of the historic paper map entitled: Topographical map of the city and county of New-York and the adjacent country. I mean either a satellite or a classic topo raster. These maps show many features in addition to the brown elevation lines that show topography. The ideal, and this probably not in the plans of Hammerhead, would be loading a second raster map behind the main vector map with transparency. I guess this could be easily added to the map though i understand the map would be a bit heavier in megas. Having the contour lines on the map gives you a quick idea of how hard the ride will be. When at home you can prepare the most convenient route but on the go you will not know if a given track is taking you along a flat area or up "the vultures cliff". It's already been said that the karoo map is not the full osm map, many secondary tracks are not shown and i mostly miss the elevation/contour lines. I use my gps (karoo 2 now) mostly for mountain bike rides.
